SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Aztec women's basketball team (16-9, 7-5) beat San Jose State (6-17, 1-10) 63-62 on the road Saturday afternoon. SDSU trailed by as much as 12 points in the first half but forced 25 turnovers and Jada Lewis scored the game-winner with eight seconds left to give the Aztecs their fifth win in the last six games.
"Jada found a way," Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. "There were some highlights [in the game], but we've got to learn to play for 40 minutes. If we can buckle down for an entire game, we're a good team, but we've got to be more consistent."
Offensively, the Aztecs had balanced scoring with four players scoring in double digits. Jada Lewis and Adryana Quezada each had 15 points, Kim Villalobos had 14 and went 8-for-10 from the line and Sarah Barcello finished with 10.
After trailing for the majority of the first half, the Aztecs grabbed a lead early in the third quarter, but then saw the Spartans go up seven points. SDSU responded with a 7-0 to close out the third to bring it to a 45-45 tie entering the fourth.
The Aztecs built a five-point lead with 6:32 left but then went cold from the field and didn't score a bucket for over five minutes.
SDSU held a two-point lead with 28 seconds left but then the Spartans hit a three to go up one with 18 seconds left.
Jada Lewis had a driving lay-up rim out, but the ball bounced to her and for an easy put back with eight seconds left. The Spartans raced down the floor but couldn't get a shot off.
The Aztecs shot just 37 percent from the field and 24 percent from three but were 86 percent from the line (18-21).
San Jose State was led by Amiyah Moreland's 18 points.
