SAN DIEGO – Following their season opener last weekend, the duo of Shaquena Foote and Aji Mbye have been awarded Mountain West weekly awards, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Foote was named MW Women's Track Athlete of the Week while Mbye was named MW Women's Freshman of the Week.
Foote made history at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational, breaking San Diego State's 20-year-old 400m dash record with at time of 53.30. She finished second overall, and first among all collegiate competitors, placing between two professional sprinters on the podium. The time was also nearly a half-second improvement on her personal best.
In addition to the school record, the Jamaica native won the 200m dash with a time of 23.47 besting second place by 0.76 seconds. The time improves her PR and ranks number three on the Aztecs' all-time list.
Mbye begins her collegiate career with her first career weekly honor, earning Freshman of the Week. The true freshman won her heat and finished third overall in both the 60m and 200m races. In the 60m, she posted a personal best time of 7.50 along with a 24.29 in the 200m dash. In what were her first ever races for the Scarlet and Black, she topped runners from nationally-ranked Texas and west region top five members Stanford and Arizona.
Foote, Mbye, and the entire Aztec team will continue their indoor schedule this weekend at the UW Invite in Washington.
