Aztecs Complete Day One at Bruin Diving Invite

LOS ANGELES – San Diego State's Valentina Lopez Arevalo finished eighth in the finals of the 1-meter springboard Friday to lead the Aztec delegation during the first wave of action at the Bruin Diving Invitational on the campus of UCLA.
 
A native of Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, Lopez Arevalo was the lone SDSU entrant to advance to the finals of the event, where she totaled 268.30 points to surpass an NCAA Zone qualifying standard.
 
With her effort, the Aztec junior compiled an aggregate total of 535.70, finishing 26.95 points behind fifth-place competitor Lauren Halleselka (562.65), while Minnesota's Av Osero took sixth (553.70), followed by Golden Gopher teammate Megan Phillips (545.00).
 
USC's Nike Agunbiade (593.70) captured the event title, while Viviana Del Angel was slotted second (579.95), followed by Utah's Holly Waxman (573.95) and Zoe Jespersgaard of UCLA (567.50).
 
The SDSU contingent also included Summer Westmoreland (231.20), who completed the preliminaries in the 23rd position, followed by Alina Skrocki (26th – 227.20), Jules Harrison (38th – 212.50), Olivia Zamudio (39th – 211.50), Taylor Konopacke (44th – 202.65) and Jessica Schroeder (45th – 202.15).
 
The Bruin Diving Invitational continues Saturday at Spieker Aquatics center with the preliminary round of the women's 3-meter springboard, starting at 10:30 a.m. PT.
 
Along with host UCLA, the Aztecs are battling divers from several schools this weekend, including Brigham Young, California Baptist, Hawai'i, Minnesota, Northern Arizona, Pepperdine, Southern California, Stanford, Utah and Wisconsin, as well as fellow Mountain West schools Fresno State, San José State and UNLV.
