SAN DIEGO – A contingent of seven San Diego State student-athletes will travel up the freeway this weekend to compete in the Bruin Diving Invitational, Jan. 12-14, at Spieker Aquatics Center on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles, California.
Along with the host Bruins, the Aztecs are scheduled to face divers from the likes of Brigham Young, California Baptist, Hawai'i, Minnesota, Northern Arizona, Pepperdine, Southern California, Stanford, Utah and Wisconsin, as well as fellow Mountain West schools Fresno State, San José State and UNLV.
Preliminary action on all three days is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. PT, and live results may be accessed on DiveMeets.com. Admission is free.
The SDSU delegation includes Valentina Lopez Arevalo, Jules Harrison, Taylor Konopacke, Jessica Schroeder, Alina Skrocki, Summer Westmoreland and Olivia Zamudio, all of whom are pegged for the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events, as well as platform competition.
This weekend's Bruin Diving Invitational commences on Friday with the preliminaries and finals of the women's 1-meter springboard, along with the women's team diving finals.
Additionally, Saturday's slate features the preliminaries and finals of the women's 3-meter springboard, before the invitational concludes on Sunday with another two rounds of the women's platform event.
Lopez Arevalo has claimed nine event titles this season, including a pair of victories on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards at the SDSU Quad Meet on Jan. 8, helping the Scarlet and Black to a 151-138 victory over conference rival Fresno State.
A native of Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, Lopez Arevalo garnered Mountain West Diver of the Week accolades for the second time this year after winning the 1-meter (297.90), 3-meter (294.80) and platform competition (299.95) at the Riverside Collegiate Invitational, held Dec. 1-2, in Riverside, California. With her effort, the Aztec junior surpassed NCAA Zone qualifying marks in all three events.
Following this weekend's excursion, the San Diego State swim and dive program reconvenes with a full squad for a double dual meet vs. Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on Friday, Jan. 19 at Aztec Aquaplex. First swim is set for 10 a.m. PT, and admission is free.
