CORVALLIS, Ore. — San Diego State battled in its first road game of the season at No. 16/17 Oregon State, but fell, 26-9, Saturday in Corvallis, Oregon.
Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei passed for 284 yards and a touchdown, ran for a touchdown, and the Beavers (3-0) sacked the Aztecs (2-2) six times in a sellout crowd of 35,591 at Reser Stadium.
In his third game as OSU's starting quarterback after transferring from Clemson, Uiagalelei completed 14 of 30 passes and had two interceptions. It was the first two turnovers of the season for Oregon State, which had combined to outscore its opponents, 97-24, over its first two games prior to playing SDSU.
Damien Martinez anchored the Beaver running game with 102 yards on 15 carries.
San Diego State running back Jaylon Armstead scored on a 6-yard run with 9:01 remaining for the first Aztec touchdown of the game. SDSU got the ball back when Cedarious Barfield picked off Uiagalelei on the San Diego State 43. The Aztecs then went 57 plays on nine plays, ending with the Armstead TD run. The 2-point conversion pass failed, however, and OSU maintained a two-score lead at 19-9.
Oregon State answered when Anthony Gould turned Uiagalelei's short pass into a 75-yard touchdown and a 26-9 advantage.
SDSU quarterback Jalen Mayden led a drive inside the Beavers' 10-yard line, but safety Akili Arnold's interception in the end zone at the 5:40 mark.
San Diego State got the ball back on Noah Tumblin's second interception of the season. The Aztecs got into OSU territory for the ninth and final time, but Jack Browning's 49-yard field goal attempt to cut the lead to two scores sailed left.
Oregon State then ran out the clock for its seventh consecutive victory, its longest streak since 2000. That team went 11-1, defeated Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, and finished No. 4 in the final Associated Press poll.
Earlier, Beaver wide receiver Silas Bolden came up big on an 84-yard scoring drive that extended the OSU lead to 19-3 at 7:40 of the third quarter. He caught a 31-yard pass, ran 18 yards on the next play on a fly sweep to the 1, setting up Uiagalelei's 1-yard touchdown run.
A 31-yard pass to tight end Jack Velling and a 35-yard strike to wide receiver Rhewa Munyagi Jr. set up the game's first touchdown midway through the second quarter. Uiagalelei tossed a backward pass to left tackle Joshua Gray, who scored untouched from the 3-yard line to make it 12-0. It was the first rushing touchdown by an Oregon State offensive lineman since 1996.
Browning kicked a 52-yard field goal for the Aztecs with 44 seconds left in the second quarter to make it 12-3 at halftime. Browning is now 3-for-4 on 50-yard field goal chances for his career.
The first two Beaver scores came on field goals (48 and 44 yards) by Atticus Sappington.
Mayden was 20 of 32 for 256 yards and an interception. Brionne Penny (six receptions) and Mark Redman (four receptions) each logged a career-high 77 receiving yards for SDSU, which was outgained, 475-326, for the game.
San Diego State was outgained on the ground, 191-70, primarily due to negative 50 yards in sacks against Mayden. Armstead rushed for a team-high 48 yards on 11 carries (4.4 avg.).
Zyrus Fiaseu led the Aztecs in tackles for a second straight game, coming up with seven stops and a tackle for loss. Marcus Ratcliffe added six tackles.
SDSU fell to 7-6 against the Pac-12 since the start of the 2016 season.
San Diego State had its 17-game winning streak snapped when winning the turnover battle and 16-game winning streak snapped when having an advantage in turnovers (+1) and average field position (+10).
