DAVIS, Calif. – The Aztec lacrosse team (6-10) fell to UC Davis 11-9 in their final game of the 2023 campaign on Saturday afternoon at UC Davis Health Stadium.
The Aztecs set off to an early lead in the first quarter, thanks to a goal from Sara Toner, assisted by Kate Christos. Deanna Balsama tacked on a second goal for the Aztecs with two minutes to go in the first.
SDSU continued to build its lead in the second quarter with goals from Deanna Balsama, Emma Betts, and two from Cailin Young, giving the Aztecs a steady 6-3 lead over the Aggies going into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Aggies capitalized, scoring five consecutive goals to take the 8-7 lead over the Aztecs.
Despite late goal contributions from Sydney Wolfington, Betts, and Balsama, the Aztecs were unable to make up the deficit, falling to the Aggies 11-9.
The Aztecs outshot the Aggies 32-27 and 21-20 in shots on goals. SDSU also had the advantage in ground balls (9-6) and draw controls (13-11).
Deanna Balsama led the Aztecs in scoring with three goals on the day followed by two from Emma Betts and Cailin Young, and one from Sydney Wolfington and Sara Toner.
Goalkeeper Sam Horan recorded nine saves on the day against the Aggies.
