SAN DIEGO -- Former San Diego State men's golf coach Neale Stoner recently passed away. He was 88.

Stoner coached the Aztecs from 1993-2000, playing a major role in the rebirth of the program by securing funding sponsorship from Aldila and Callaway corporations.

SDSU captured six tournament titles in Stoner's stint as head coach and had 10 individual winners. Under Stoner's direction, San Diego State made the NCAA Championships in 1999 for the first time in 15 seasons. The Aztecs finished 29th in the event, led by current PGA Tour professional Scott Piercy.

Prior to becoming the head men's golf coach at SDSU, Stoner served as the athletic director at Cal State Fullerton from 1973-79 before becoming the AD at Illinois until 1988.

Stoner was inducted into Cal State Fullerton's Hall of Fame in 2015.

Stoner is survived by his wife of 63 years, Linda, their five daughters and numerous grandchildren. Services will be held at The Church of Rancho Bernardo on March 22.
