SAN DIEGO – San Diego State has hired Jeff Sobol as its new head of football performance under head coach Sean Lewis.

Most recently, Sobol served as the head strength and conditioning coach at the University of Akron.

Prior to Akron, he spent five years at Kent State as the head football sports performance coach. Sobol has spent six seasons total on coaching staffs with Lewis including a year at Bowling Green early on in his career.

After the Flashes went 3-1 in a shortened 2020 season, Sobol was part of another historic season for the Flashes in 2021. The team set records for total offense and passing yards en route to a MAC Championship appearance and a berth in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Sobol was part of the Flashes' historic 2019 season in which they picked up a 51-41 win in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl. It was the first bowl win in Kent State history.

Prior to Syracuse, Sobol also worked with current Flashes' head coach Sean Lewis at Bowling Green.  In addition to football, he worked with the Falcon baseball and softball teams.

A three-year starting defensive lineman at Eastern Illinois, Sobol transitioned into the sports performance field at his alma mater.  He was a graduate assistant, working closely with the Panther football team.

Earning a bachelor's and master's degree from Eastern Illinois, Sobol also played three seasons in the Arena Football League.
