SAN DIEGO – San Diego State's Meredith Smithbaker garnered Mountain West Swimmer of the Week accolades for her performances at the highly competitive Art Adamson Invitational, held Nov. 15-17 in College Station, Texas. The announcement was made Tuesday by the league office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
With her award, Smithbaker collected the fourth conference weekly honor of her career and second of the season.
A native of Fort Collins, Colorado, Smithbaker led the Aztecs with 45 points, as the Scarlet and Black finished fifth among seven teams in a stacked field that featured a pair of ranked squads in No. 25 Texas A&M and No. 23 UCLA, along with Power 5 schools LSU, Houston, Washington State and Utah.
Individually, Smithbaker logged three top-seven placements, highlighted by a victory in the 50 freestyle with a career-fast and NCAA "B" cut time of 22.24, which ranks third in school history and 18th in Division I as of Nov. 21, according to USA Swimming.
The SDSU junior also recorded a sixth-place swim in 100 freestyle with a season-best 49.48 clocking and finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a season-fast 1:01.17, surpassing another NCAA "B" cut qualifying standard.
In addition, Smithbaker swam the opening leg of the Aztecs' top 400 free relay that finished fourth with a time of 3:20.00, besting A squads from Houston and Utah.
San Diego State returns to the competition pool when the full squad convenes for a dual meet against Air Force on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at Aztec Aquaplex, starting at 10 a.m. PT. Prior to that event, Aztec divers will head up the freeway for the Riverside Diving Invitational, Dec. 1-2.
