SAN DIEGO – The Aztec women's basketball team (0-2) fell to California Baptist (2-0) in their home opener Friday night. SDSU trailed by as much as 16 points and rallied to pull within two late in the fourth quarter before the Lancers were able to close out the game.
Jada Lewis, a Portland State graduate transfer playing her first game inside Viejas Arena, led the Aztecs with 20 points, including nine in the fourth quarter. Kim Villalobos had 17 points, five assists and three steals and Abby Prohaska (12) and Sarah Barcello (10) also finished in double-digits.
The Lancers began the game on an 8-0 run and hit six threes in the opening quarter to open a double-digit lead.
"I was disappointed in our effort in the first quarter," Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson. "We gave them a nine-point cushion and I didn't think we were playing San Diego State basketball, so we challenged them at halftime to be better there. We were making errors that just don't fit with our system and I thought they did a good job correcting that in the second half and that's how we were able to climb back into the game."
The Lancers made just three more three-pointers after the opening quarter, while the Aztecs started to get hot from outside late in the game, specifically Lewis who hit three threes in the final quarter.
"Coach has a lot of confidence in all of us that we can shoot," Lewis said after the game. "I know in my head that I need to shoot all the time, so that's what I just kept repeating to myself and my teammates. Keep shooting, keep shooting."
A Lewis three pulled SDSU within two points with three minutes left, but the Lancers scored the next five points.
Chloe Webb led CBU with 20 points.
STAT OF THE GAME
