SAN DIEGO – The Aztec women's golf team returns to action this weekend at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at the University of Denver Golf Club.
Golfers will play 18 holes each day Friday-Sunday. The 14-team field mostly consists of seven power-five programs (Cal, Colorado, Kansas, Oregon State Vanderbilt, Washington State and Wisconsin). Other schools competing include Denver, Harvard, New Mexico, Tulane, UNLV, and Xavier.
Head coach Lauren Dobashi (3rd season) will use the lineup of Emma Narita, Stephanie Barbaglia, Andrea Gomez, Anna Lina Otten, and Anika Sato.
Narita (Tokyo, Japan) has been the top Aztec finisher in each of her first two collegiate tournaments. She tied for 15th at the Golf and Leadership Invitational with a 218 (+2), which included a two-under-par 70 in her first round.
Barbaglia (Johannesburg, South Africa) has finished second among SDSU golfers in both tournaments this year. She is coming off a career-best 224 (+8) at the Golf and Leadership Invitational which featured an even par 72 and a two-under-par 70.
Gomez (Huixquilucan, Mexico) has scored in all six rounds this season and has a career count percentage of 89.7. She finished the Golf and Leadership Invitational strong with an even par 72 in her final round.
Otten (Neuss, Germany), who had the second best average 18-hole score among returners (76.6), will be making her 26th career start. She shot a 228 in each of SDSU's first two tournaments.
Sato (Utsunomiya, Japan) had the lowest average score among returners. She has been dealing with a lingering injury that has forced her to withdraw from both of SDSU's tournaments so far this season. She shot a 222 (+6) at this tournament last year.
The Aztecs played in this tournament last year and tied for ninth out of 16 teams after shooting a 281 (+3) in their final round.
The University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch is par 72 and was designed by three-time U.S. Open Champion Hale Irwin. It has views of the Rocky Mountains and features expansive greens. Its yardage will be either 6,646 or 6,708 depending on the day, but the ball will carry due to the mile-high elevation.
Friday's forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with temperatures reaching the high 50's. Temperatures should top 70 on Saturday and Sunday, although it will still be chilly in the morning.
