San Diego State Plays Host to Utah State in Homecoming Game on Saturday
- San Diego State plays host to its annual Homecoming Game Saturday against Utah State at Bashor Field at Snapdragon Stadium.
- Saturday is just the second home game for the Aztecs (3-5, 1-3 Mountain West) since Sept. 22 after opening the season with three straight home contests and four in a 27-day span to start the year.
- SDSU is coming off its second idle week in the month of October. San Diego State played six straight weeks to start the season, beginning with a week zero game against Ohio on Aug. 26. San Diego State had its first open date on Oct. 7, then played in back-to-back weeks at Hawai'i (Oct. 14) and against Nevada (Oct. 21) before another open date last weekend (Oct. 28).
- The Aztecs end their regular season with four consecutive games in November.
- After beating Hawai'i, 41-34, in Honolulu on Oct. 14 in a matchup that had the fourth-most combined points (75) in a SDSU Mountain West game, the most combined in a San Diego State game since a 42-35 loss (77 total points) to Army West Point in the 2017 Armed Forces Bowl and the most combined in an Aztec win since a 45-40 victory (85 total points) vs. California on Sept. 10, 2016, SDSU suffered through a 6-0 loss to Nevada on Oct. 21.
- The six combined points vs. Nevada were tied for the fewest in a San Diego State game in its Division I history (since 1969) (also a 6-0 win over Weber State on Aug. 31, 2019) and fewest in any Aztec game featuring two FBS teams.
- It was the first time SDSU has been shut out since a 27-0 loss to Ohio in the 2018 Frisco Bowl (Dec. 19) and just the second shutout in the last 213 games (streak started on Nov. 25, 2006).
- San Diego State got into Nevada territory on seven of its 10 drives, but only reached the red zone for one play, which went down as a 34-yard missed field goal by Jack Browning.
- The Aztecs were 0-for-10 on third down and 1-for-3 on fourth down.
- SDSU's defense held its opponent to single digits for the 21st time since 2015 (110 games). It was also the 31st time over that stretch that San Diego State kept an opponent to 10 or less points.
- The Aztecs have won six of their last seven games when coming off an "idle" week (includes only planned idle weeks and not bowl games), including a 3-0 record under head coach Brady Hoke over that span (streak started in 2017 season, Hoke's second head coaching stint started in 2020). SDSU's only loss in its last seven games coming off a "bye" was a 17-13 defeat to Nevada on Nov. 9, 2019.
- The Aztecs have won each of their last two Homecoming Games (14-10 vs. UNLV on Nov. 5, 2022 and 23-21 vs. Nevada on Nov. 13, 2021) and six of the last eight dating back to 2014.
- San Diego State is playing one of the toughest schedules in the country this season with five games against 10-win teams - vs. Ohio, at Oregon State, vs. Boise State, at Air Force and vs. Fresno State - and eight vs. bowl teams from a year ago - also vs. UCLA, vs. Utah State and at San Jose State.
- The beginning of the Aztecs' schedule was particularly tough as five of their first six opponents made a bowl in 2022, including games vs. Ohio (10-4) on Aug. 26 (W, 20-13), UCLA (9-4) on Sept. 9 (L, 35-10), at Oregon State (10-3) on Sept. 16 (L, 26-9), vs. Boise State (10-4) on Sept. 22 (L, 34-31) and at Air Force (10-4) on Sept. 30 (L, 49-10).
- SDSU's seven FBS opponents so far have combined to go 34-24 (.586). When you take away the games vs. San Diego State, those opponents are still 29-22 (.569).
- Fifteen (15) players have earned their first career Division I start this season for the Aztecs and 18 players overall have made their first start at SDSU.
- San Diego State has played three of the top-10 defenses in the country this year, including No. 3 Air Force (237.9 yards allowed per game), No. 5 Ohio (264.0) and No. 10 UCLA (277.5). In those games, the Aztecs totaled 227 at Air Force, 318 against Ohio and 259 vs. UCLA.
- Saturday's game will mark the 17th meeting in series history, with SDSU owning a 13-3 series lead.
- In the last meeting between the two schools in the 2021 Mountain West Championship, San Diego State lost, 46-13, after having 21 players out with a "medical concern," including all of its tight ends, starting wide receiver Tyrell Shavers and many other important backups.
