Gonzalez Fitzmaurice Leads Aztecs

MALIBU, CALIF. – The San Diego State men's tennis team kept playing in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Saturday in Malibu, California. SDSU sent three doubles teams and two singles players out onto the courts for the final day of the tournament for San Diego State. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice was the lone Aztec representative to pick up a win on Saturday.
 
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice faced Loyola Marymount's Nicolas Pesoli. The Aztec earned a victory in straight sets, taking down the Lion 6-3, 6-4.
 
The fourth seeded duo in the doubles bracket, Robin Parts and Alexander Mandma advanced all the way to the Quarterfinals on Friday. In Saturday's matchup, the pair drew Arizona's seventh seeded combo of Colton Smith and Jay Friend. The match went to a tiebreaker, but the Aztecs fell just shy of a victory, 8-7 (7-4).
 
The other singles player for SDSU, Liam Spiers went up against UC Irvine's Matthew Sah. Spiers sent the first set to a tiebreaker but did not come out on top, 7-6 (7-3). He dropped the second set 6-3.
 
Mathieu Josserand and Andre Saleh also competed in doubles. They battled Cal Poly's Sean Ferguson and Raz Haviv. The Aztecs kept things competitive but fell 8-6.
 
In his doubles match, Spiers partnered with Lenny Melzer. Opposing Cal Poly's Aaron Eliscu and Wian Roothman, they were bested 8-1.
 
San Diego State finishes up its fall schedule with the ITA Fall National Championships from Wednesday, Nov. 1, through Sunday, Nov. 5 and the Kramer Collegiate Classic from Friday, Nov. 3 until the 5th.The ITA Championships are in San Diego while the Kramer Collegiate Classic is in Rolling Hills, California.
