SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's tennis team kept playing in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Saturday at the Aztec Tennis Center. Five Aztecs played singles while four of them also played doubles. SDSU student-athletes won three of their five singles matches.
In her singles match, Gloria Alogo faced Hawai'i's Nelly Knezkova. After dropping the first set 6-2, Alogo bounced back to win the second by the same score to force a deciding tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, she won 10-6 to complete the comeback.
Playing in an extra match, Myah Petchey went up against UC Santa Barbara's Lucy Lu. Petchey was consistent in a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Andreea Velcea opposed UC Irvine's Kayla Meraz. Velcea faced little resistance on the way to a 6-0, 6-2 win.
Eighth seeded Andjela Skrobonja drew Emma Charney, of USC, in the Round of 16 in the main singles bracket. Skrobonja was bested 6-1, 6-2.
Also the eighth seed in doubles, Skrobonja and partner Velcea battled Grand Canyon's Santa Strombacha and Natasha Puehse in the Round of 16. They were in the match until the very end but ended up on the wrong side of an 8-5 score.
Zoe Olmos battled Arizona's Kayla Wilkins. Olmos kept things close in the first set but fell 7-5. She was not as successful in the second set, dropping it 6-3.
Petchey and Olmos played an extra doubles match versus Arizona's Reece Carter and Lauren Friedman. The Aztecs fell by a 6-2 score.
