SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's tennis team continued play in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Friday at the Aztec Tennis Center. Six Aztecs played doubles while four also played singles. SDSU players won two of three matches in doubles and three of four in singles.
The eighth seed in the tournament, Andjela Skrobonja faced Arizona's Midori Castillo in the Round of 32. Skrobonja was consistent in a 6-3, 6-3 victory to advance. In Saturday's Round of 16, Skrobonja will oppose Emma Charney, of USC.
Also the eighth seed in doubles, Skrobonja partnered up with Andreea Velcea. After a first-round bye, the pair drew CSUN's Cindy Ung and Vitoria Solis Urdiales. The Aztecs jumped out to a commanding 6-1 lead before the Matadors retired early due to an injury.
Gloria Alogo and Zoe Olmos dueled Grand Canyon's Valentina Del Marco and Dania Deaifi. They cruised to an 8-3 win.
In her singles match, Alogo drew Arizona's Tanvi Narendran. After falling 6-3 in the first set, Alogo bounced back to send the second to a tiebreaker, where she picked up a 7-6 (7-5) win. She edged Narendran 10-7 in the deciding tiebreaker to earn the victory.
In the consolation bracket, Velcea battled USC's Gabrielle Lee. The Aztec won by the same score as Skrobonja, 6-3, 6-3.
Olmos also played in the Round of 32. However, she had less success than her teammate, falling 6-4, 6-1.
Taking the day off in singles, Myah Petchey and Rania Azziz played doubles against UC San Diego's Katelyn Vu and Kelly Leung. The SDSU pair kept things close but ran out of steam, falling 8-5.
