SAN DIEGO – On Thursday, the San Diego State women's tennis team began the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at the Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU has six players competing in the tournament and they won six of their ten singles matches on the opening day of play.
The only American playing for San Diego State, Zoe Olmos drew CSUN's Cindy Ung in the first round. Olmos picked up a win in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. In the next round, she faced Long Beach State's Hana Becirovic Novak. Olmos coasted to a 6-1, 6-3 victory to advance to the Round of 32.
The eighth seed in the tournament, Andjela Skrobonja earned a bye in the first round. Her only match of the day was against Arizona's Belen Nevenhoven. Skrobonja faced little resistance in a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Andreea Velcea opened the tournament against CSUN's Tallia Harper. Velcea was consistent in a 6-3, 6-3 win. She battled Arizona State's Marianna Argyrokastriti next and was downed 6-3, 6-4.
The lone underclassman on the SDSU roster, Gloria Alogo went up against Long Beach State's Mathilde Tranberg. Alogo cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win to move on. In the following round, she faced seeded Reece Carter, of Arizona, but fell 6-3, 6-3.
A transfer from Oregon, Myah Petchey drew Cal State Fullerton's Diana Yanotovskaya in the first round. She dropped the first set 6-4 but bounced back to take the second 6-3. Petchey held on to win the deciding set 6-4 to complete the comeback. She also faced a seeded opponent in the following round, taking on UCLA's Elise Wagle. Petchey sent the first set to a tiebreaker but ran out of steam as the was defeated 7-6 (7-1), 6-0.
Rania Azziz drew Brandelyn Fulgenzi, of Arizona. Azziz was bested 6-2, 6-3.
