SAN DIEGO – On Saturday, the San Diego State women's tennis team competed in the second day of the SDSU Fall Classic I at the Aztec Tennis Center. Rania Azziz, Myah Petchey and Andreea Velcea once again represented the Scarlet and Black against players from CSUN, Grand Canyon, Minnesota and UTEP. All three played singles while Azziz and Velcea played doubles.
After recording the lone SDSU loss yesterday, Petchey was looking to rebound against CSUN's Yuliia Zhytelna. She came through in straight sets, recording her first victory as an Aztec 6-3, 6-4. Petchey will go up against CSUN's Sasha Turchak tomorrow.
Velcea went up against Minnesota's Anali Kocevar. She made it out of a competitive first set victorious 7-5 and coasted to a win with a 6-1 second. Tomorrow, she will draw Minnesota's Emma Belluomini.
Coming off a win on her birthday yesterday, Azziz faced Belluomini. The Aztec took the first set 6-3. The second was close but went in favor of Belluomini in the tiebreaker 7-6 (7-1). The deciding third set also went to a tiebreaker, where Azziz led 3-0 and 6-4 but ultimately lost 8-6. She will battle another Golden Gopher tomorrow in Kocevar.
In doubles, Azziz and Velcea played Zhytelna and Turchak. The match went back and forth with the two duos trading games. In the tiebreaker, after the Matadors jumped out to an early lead, the Aztecs came back to even the score at five but could not complete the comeback, falling 7-6 (7-5). They will face Minnesota's Aiva Schmitz and Sofia Pizzoni for third place tomorrow.
