SAN DIEGO – On Friday, the San Diego State women's tennis team played at the Aztec Tennis Center for the first time this season on the first day of the SDSU Fall Classic I. The Scarlet and Black were represented by Rania Azziz, Myah Petchey and Andreea Velcea in the event featuring players from CSUN, Grand Canyon, Minnesota and UTEP. All three played singles while Azziz and Velcea paired up in doubles.
Celebrating her 22nd birthday, Azziz drew CSUN's Victoria Santibañez Luna. She coasted to a 6-1 victory in the first set before taking the second 6-3 to advance to the Semifinals.
Velcea went up against CSUN's Cindy Ung. She took down the Matador in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles, Azziz and Velcea faced UTEP's pairing of Carlotta Mencaglia and Hanna Telzynska. The Aztecs cruised to a 6-2 victory.
Making her SDSU debut, Petchey battled UTEP's Veronika Lebisova. She fell 6-2, 6-4.
