ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The San Diego State men's tennis team began its 2023 fall schedule in the USTA Pro Futures tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Scarlet and Black were represented by sophomore Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice, who is coming off an outstanding freshman year.

Gonzalez Fitzmaurice entered the match on a five-match winning streak going back to the end of last spring. He drew a tough matchup with Arizona State senior Maxwell McKennon, the 14th seed in the tournament. After dropping the first set 6-1, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice was on the brink of defeat, but he battled his way back to take the second 6-3. He carried that momentum into the third set tiebreaker, where he won 10-3 to advance to the Finals of the Qualifying flight of the tournament. In tomorrow's Finals, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice will battle sixth seeded Canadian professional Marko Stakusic to advance to the main draw.

Following tomorrow's action, San Diego State will head to Tulsa, Oklahoma, this weekend for the ITA All-American Championships starting on Saturday, September 30.
