SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's soccer junior forward Denise Castro has been named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced from their office in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Monday. This is the third time in her career that Castro has been named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week.
Castro, a San Ysidro, California native, tallied six points on the week as the Aztecs earned a 5-1 win at Fresno State to open conference play and a 2-2 draw on the road at San Jose State. Castro provided both a goal and assist in both games.
In the win over Fresno State, Castro had one shot one frame and scored it in the 20th minute to give the Aztecs the lead. Later in the match she set up Kali Trevithick for the Aztecs fourth goal of the night with a nice ball played across the box to Trevithick who scored it. Castro then scored another goal and tallied another assist in the 2-2 draw at San Jose State on Sunday. She leveled the score in the 53rd minute, her fourth goal in her last three matches, before assisting on the second goal of the afternoon in the 74th minute.
On the season Castro has scored six goals, and has dished out an additional three assists. Of those tallies, Castro has scored four goals and added an additional two assists in her last three matches. The junior now sits ninth all-time in career goals at San Diego State with 21, and is just seven points shy of cracking the all-time career points list with 50 points (21 goals, 8 assists).
The Aztecs (6-2-2, 1-0-1 MW) are next in action on Thursday when they host the Air Force Academy at 5 p.m. PT.
