SAN DIEGO – Three members of the San Diego State Women's Tennis team competed for the first time this season, with two of them making their debuts for the Scarlet and Black. The Aztecs were at the Hogan Tennis Center on the campus of the University of San Diego for the USTA Intercollegiate Championships, which started today with the Rounds of 64 and 32 in singles play. Andjela Skrobonja picked up the first win of the year for SDSU while Zoe Olmos and Gloria Alogo played for the first time since joining the Aztec roster.

Following a bye in the Round of 64, the fifth seeded Skrobonja matched up with Tamari Gagoshidze in the Round of 32. The Aztec cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory to advance to the Round of 16. Tomorrow, Skrobonja will battle the winner of Kaitlyn Taylor and Raquel Gonzalez at 10 a.m.

Olmos was the lone SDSU athlete to play in the Round of 64. She drew a tough opponent in Jocelyn Massey. The back and forth first set went to a tiebreaker, where Olmos ended up on top 7-6 (7-3). However, Olmos was unable to close out Massey, dropping the ensuing two sets 6-2, 6-3.

After a first-round bye, Alogo faced off against seventh seeded Vivian Ovrootsky in the Round of 32. After she was blanked 6-0 in the first set, Alogo trailed 4-1 in the second when she suffered an injury, ending the match in favor of Ovrootsky.

The USTA Championships will continue tomorrow with Skrobonja in the Round of 16 and doubles featuring her and Alogo teaming up in the Round of 16 against Carri Hayes and Betina Tokac at 9 a.m.
