Aztecs Complete Day One of Husky Invitational

BREMERTON, Wash. -- The San Diego State men's golf team beat darkness to finish its second round in 12th place at the Husky Invitational Monday in Bremerton, Washington. The Aztecs followed up their 7-over-par 295 in the opening round with a 1-over 289 in the second round, collectively sitting at 8-over on the par-72, 7,115-yard Gold Mountain Golf Club (Olympic Course).
 
SDSU is within six strokes of four programs in the 14-team field, just barely trailing eighth-place Utah (+2), San Jose State (+4), Washington State (+6) and St. Mary's (+7), and well clear of Colorado State (+17) and Seattle Univ. (+27 through 14 holes). Host Washington is out to a commanding lead at 21-under 555, while California, Oregon and Oregon State are tied for second at -9. Oklahoma rounds out the top 5 at -4.
 
Sophomore Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) paces San Diego State through 36 holes at even-par 144, which is tied for 26th out of 78 entrants. Kowack opened with a 2-over 74 and followed with a 2-under 70.
 
Junior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) is tied for 42nd at 2-over 146 after consecutive 73s, while junior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) is tied for 42nd at 3-over 147 (73-74).
 
Sophomore Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) bettered his 3-over 75 with a 1-over 73 and is tied for 57th at +4, and junior Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) is tied for 60th at +5, going 76-73.
 
Three other SDSU golfers are competing as individuals in the Husky Individual. Senior Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas) is 14th out of 49 at 2-under 142 with matching 71s, freshman Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) is tied for 36th (+3) and junior Rugthai Thongsom (Surat Thani, Thailand) is tied for 41st at +4.
 
Following the completion of the suspended second round early Tuesday, San Diego State will tee off in its final round at 7:45 a.m. PT from the 10th hole.
