SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's soccer dropped a tough match to Long Beach State 3-0 on Sunday night at the SDSU Sports Deck. The Beach scored a goal in the first hlaf and two in the second half of play.

Early in the match, LBSU (2-2-0) and San Diego State (2-1-1) felt each other out, with neither team able to find the back of the net. Long Beach State had the first few shots of the half in the fifth and seventh minutes, but Alexa Madueno in goal for the Aztecs was able to save both. After that sequence of play, both Kali Trevithick and Denise Castro challenged the Long Beach State keeper in the first 15 minutes, but could not find a way past.

LBSU continued to put the pressure on the Aztecs and in the 25th minute Kassandra Ceja found the back of the net to give the Beach a 1-0 advantage. LBSU worked the ball wide before a cross found the foot of Ceja who put it home.

Neither team were able to challenge the opposing keeper for the remainder of the half, and the Aztecs went to the halftime break down a goal.

In the second half the Aztecs tried to claw their way back into the game, but it was LBSU who tacked on two more goals late in the half. Ceja scored her second of the night in the 67th minute, and almost had a hat trick by the 70th minute, but Madueno made an incredible save in goal for the Aztecs to keep things at 2-0. However, with the Aztecs searching for a goal at the other end, LBSU was able to counter one final time. In the 87th minute Summer Laskey scored a late third for the Beach after a ball ricocheted off Kiera Utush and back to Laskey who then scored from outside the box.

Madueno made seven saves in goal for the Aztecs, taking her career tally to 230 saves, which puts her third all-time at SDSU. Offensively SDSU fired off 13 shots, with Denise Castro, Dori Savage, Grace Goins, and Kali Trevithick all tallying two shots to lead the way.

Up Next: The Aztecs hit the road for the first time in 2023 when they play at #23 Washington State on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT and will be streamed on the Pac-12 Network.
