SAN DIEGO – San Diego State earned the No. 2 seed in the 2023 Mountain West Baseball Championship, set for May 25-28 in Fresno, California. The announcement was made Saturday by the league office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The Aztecs (24-27, 18-11 MW) completed a sweep of New Mexico at home this weekend to claim a share of the Mountain West regular-season title with San José State (27-24, 18-11 MW).
However, the Spartans will enter the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed by virtue of winning three of five games against SDSU during the 2023 campaign.
The Aztecs open the MW Championship against No. 3 seed Air Force (26-29, 17-13 MW) on Thursday, May 25, starting at 1:30 p.m. PT on Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium. The teams split their season series at three games apiece, with each side capturing two of three encounters at their respective home diamonds.
Meanwhile, San José State will battle fourth-seeded Fresno State (29-25, 16-14 MW) in its tournament opener on Thursday at 6 p.m.
If SDSU defeats the Falcons, it will face the winner of the Spartans-Bulldogs clash in the winners bracket on Friday with another starting time of 6 p.m.
The Aztecs have won the most Mountain West postseason championships, taking home six crowns since the league's inception (2000, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018). In all, SDSU has posted a 50-32 record in 21 MW tournament appearances.
Additionally, the Aztecs have three Mountain West regular-season titles to their credit (2000, 2004, 2023).
