SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State softball junior second baseman Makena Brocki (Chino Hills, Calif.) has been named to the 2023 Academic All-District Team, the College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced today.
The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, and recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-American Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected next month.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at her current institution.
Brocki is a criminal justice major with a 3.70 GPA, and a two-time Mountain West Scholar-Athlete (2021-22) and two-time MW Spring All-Academic Team (2021-22) selection.
On the field, Brocki earned all-MW first-team accolades last week after hitting .371 (23-for-62) in league play with 19 RBIs, 13 runs, eight doubles, four triples, a .629 slugging percentage and a .423 on-base mark. Brocki's eight doubles were the second most in league games, while her four triples tied for second. Overall, Brocki is hitting .271 (35-for-129) with 30 RBIs, 18 runs, 13 doubles, four triples and six stolen bases.
Brocki is the first San Diego State player to earn Academic All-District honors since Samantha Camello in 2016 and just the sixth Aztec since 2004. Camello eventually was named a second-team CoSIDA (now CSC) Academic All-American that year.
Back-to-back MW champions, SDSU (35-15) plays Liberty (38-20) in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional on the campus of the No. 2 overall seed UCLA (52-5) at 8 p.m. PT Friday. Grand Canyon (46-11) is the other team in the double-elimination regional.
