SAN DIEGO – One former Aztec played in the NBA Playoffs, four more saw action in the MLB and another finished second in the Wells Fargo Championship.
In the NBA, forward Jalen McDaniels (2017-19) played 12 minutes in Philadelphia's game two loss to Boston, scoring three points and grabbing a rebound. He played 11 minutes in game three and scored three more points with three rebounds and an assist. The series is tied 2-2. Game five is scheduled for Tuesday evening in Boston.
In the MLB, Seattle infielder Ty France (2013-15) started all seven of his team's games at first base. This week, he batted .333 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored. On Monday night, France accounted for the Mariners' lone run with a solo blast to right center in the first inning. This season, he is batting .264 with a .356 on-base percentage, two home runs, 16 RBIs, 19 runs scored and a stolen base.
Colorado infielder Alan Trejo (2015-17) started at second base three times. During the week, he batted .417 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. On Wednesday, Trejo hit a three-run bases-clearing double into the left-center gap to increase the Rockies' lead to 4-1 in a game they would win 7-1. This season, he is batting .250 with eight RBIs, six runs scored and a stolen base.
Catcher Seby Zavala (2012-15) played six times behind the dish with three starts for the Chicago White Sox. He walked and scored on Thursday. On Saturday, Zavala launched a solo shot to left to give the White Sox a 3-1 lead over Cincinnati.This season, he has seven hits with two home runs, three RBIs, six runs scored and a stolen base.
Infielder David Hensley (2015-18) started a game each at first base, third base and designated hitter for Houston. He walked and scored on Wednesday. On Monday night, Hensley went deep to left center to give the Astros a 4-3 lead over the Angels. This season, Hensley has nine hits with a home run, three RBIs, ten runs scored and a stolen base.
Washington pitcher Stephen Strasburg (2007-09) is on the 60-Day IL.
On Tuesday, San Francisco called up infielder Casey Schmitt (2018-20) from Triple-A Sacramento. The top infield prospect in the Giants' system, Schmitt made two All-Mountain West teams and was named a third team All-American during his time with the Scarlet and Black. He was also one of the top pitchers for San Diego State during his time on The Mesa.
On the PGA Tour, Xander Schauffele (2013-15) placed second in the Wells Fargo Championship at 15-under-par. J.J. Spaun (2009-12) tied for 27th in the event at four-under-par while Scott Piercy (1999-2001) did not make the cut. Schauffele is ranked fifth in the world and eighth in the FedEx Cup and has won seven PGA Tour events in his career. Spaun ranks 73rd in the world and 59th in the FedEx Cup with one career PGA Tour victory. Piercy has four career PGA Tour wins. Next weekend, Spaun and Piercy will compete in the AT&T Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas, May 11-14.
