SAN DIEGO – Two former Aztecs played in the NBA Playoffs, four more saw action in the MLB and another placed in the top five on the PGA Tour.
In the NBA, Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard (2010-11) led his team in game two against Phoenix with team highs of 31 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals. However, the game went to Phoenix. Leonard missed games three and four and will be out for game five as well due to a knee injury. The Suns lead the series 3-1 with game five slated for Tuesday night. Should Los Angeles win, Leonard will try to return for game six, set for Thursday.
Forward Jalen McDaniels (2017-19) played in the last two games of Philadelphia's sweep against Brooklyn. In Thursday's third game, he put up four points and three rebounds in 11 minutes in a 102-97 win. In game four, on Saturday, McDaniels recorded four points and two rebounds in 14 minutes in a 96-88 victory. In the next round, the 76ers will play the winner of the Boston-Atlanta series which the Celtics currently lead 3-1.
In the MLB, Seattle infielder Ty France (2013-15) played in all five of his team's games last week at first base. He hit two singles and a double with three RBIs and two runs scored. On Tuesday, France hit a sacrifice fly in the tenth inning to tie the game at five, but Seattle would fall 6-5 in the eleventh. He knocked a two-run single on Sunday to give the Mariners a 3-2 lead, but they would not score again, losing 7-3. This season, he is batting .291 with a .380 on-base percentage, one home run, 15 RBIs, 17 runs scored and a stolen base.
Infielder David Hensley (2015-18) started a game each in left field and at first base for Houston, with an additional appearance as a pinch runner. He walked and scored on both Wednesday and Sunday. This season, Hensley has seven hits with two RBIs, seven runs scored and a stolen base.
Catcher Seby Zavala (2012-15) started three times behind the dish for the Chicago White Sox. This season, he is batting .222 with one home run, two RBIs, four runs scored and a stolen base.
Colorado infielder Alan Trejo (2015-17) appeared in all seven games last week. He started at second base five times and shortstop once with another appearance at second base off the bench. During the week, he put together three singles, a double, two RBIs and a run scored. This season, he is batting .238 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Washington pitcher Stephen Strasburg (2007-09) is on the 60-Day IL.
On the PGA Tour, Xander Schauffele (2013-15) tied for fourth in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at 26-under-par while J.J. Spaun (2009-12) tied for 26th at 17-under-par in the event and Scott Piercy (1999-2001) did not make the cut. Schauffele is ranked fifth in the world and 21st in the FedEx Cup and has won seven PGA Tour events in his career. Spaun ranks 71st in the world and 58th in the FedEx Cup with one career PGA Tour victory. Piercy has four career PGA Tour wins. Next weekend, Piercy will compete in the Mexico Open at Vidanta in Vallarta, Mexico, April 27-30.
