Aztecs Shine Bright on Senior Night

SAN DIEGO – The Aztec lacrosse team (6-9) shined on senior night and defeated Arizona State (4-11) 15-12 on Friday evening. SDSU had six different players score including five goals from senior Caitlin Jones and three from senior Cailin Young.

The Aztecs were led by seniors Caitlin Jones and Cailin Young. Jones led the team with five goals on the evening while Young added three of her own. Deanna Balsama, Sydney Wolfington, and Sara Toner contributed two each while Emma Betts added one.
 
Young got the Aztec scoring started early with two consecutive goals in the first two minutes of the first quarter. Toner quickly followed suit and scored, giving the Aztecs an early 3-0 lead over the Sun Devils.
 
The scoring battle began and continued to go back and forth as the Sun Devils found their pace, but the Aztecs held their ground, leading 10-6 at the half.
 
The Aztecs tacked on an additional five goals between the third and fourth quarter, thanks to contributions from Caitlin Jones, Cailin Young, and Sydney Wolfington to secure their 15-12 victory over the Sun Devils.

SDSU outshot ASU 29-27 and 23-20 in shots on goal. They also had an advantage in ground balls (16-11).

Sydney Wolfington and Shelby Hook led the team with three ground balls respectively while Kate Christos and Sam Horan each recorded a caused turnover for the Aztecs.

Goalkeeper Sam Horan finished with 8 saves on the night as she continues to lead the nation in saves and saves per game.

The Aztecs will travel to Davis, California to take on the UC Davis Aggies next Saturday, April 29 at Noon PT for their final matchup of the 2023 campaign.
