COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – On Wednesday, the Mountain West Conference announced its men's tennis awards for this week and San Diego State player Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice was named the conference's Freshman of the Week, for the week ending on Tuesday, April 18.

This is the second time this season that Gonzalez Fitzmaurice has garnered Freshman of the Week accolades. The first time was when the Scarlet and Black swept both Mountain West awards on January 18, with Johannes Seeman winning Player of the Week. Chikaya Sato was also named Player of the Week on March 8. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice is the first player in program history to win Freshman of the Week.

Gonzalez Fitzmaurice won both his singles matches and a doubles match last week. He played both his singles matches on the No. 5 court. On Saturday, he faced UC San Diego's Jett Cole and won in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (2). On Sunday, he battled Nevada's Juan Batalla, who he grew up with. Despite being several years younger than his opponent, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice won 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. In doubles, he played with Andre Saleh on Sunday and defeated Pedro Liborio and Satchel Benn 6-4 to help San Diego State win the doubles point.

San Diego State concludes its regular season schedule with matches at No. 60 New Mexico on Thursday, April 20, and Air Force on Saturday, April 22.
