Aztecs Through One Round at MW Championships

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The Aztec women's golf team is tied for seventh place after the first round of the Mountain West Championships Tuesday in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Led by Anika Sato's two-under-par 70, SDSU shot a 295 in the opening round.
 
In the front nine, SDSU combined for 10 birdies and just four bogeys to grab an early lead. However, as the temperatures rose and winds increased, the Aztecs scores started to creep over par on the back nine.
 
Sato is tied for fourth and her 70 was aided by being bogey free and collecting four birdies in the first 11 holes. She has shot an even par or better in four of her last five rounds.
 
Both Bernice Olivarez Ilas and April Ranches were two-under-par through nine holes before bogeying three of the first five on the back nine. Olivarez Ilas finished with a one-over-par 73, putting her in a tie for 17th place.
 
Like many of the Aztecs, Ranches ran into trouble on the back nine and ended up shooting a 77.
 
Andrea Gomez shot a three-over-par 75. She was two-under through 11 holes before bogeying five of her final seven.
 
Sammy Lee finished the first 18 with a 78.
 
Through 18 holes, New Mexico holds a one stroke lead over No. 8 San Jose State for first place. SDSU is 10 strokes behind New Mexico.
 
The Lobos' Napat Lertsadwattana and San Jose State's Antonia Malate are tied for first after shooting a four-under-par 68.
