SAN DIEGO – Two former Aztecs played in the NBA Playoffs, five more saw action in the MLB and another placed in the top five on the PGA Tour.
In the NBA, Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard (2010-11) led his team to a win in the first game of its playoff series with the Phoenix Suns. He scored a game-high 38 points to go with five rebounds, five assists, a steal and a block in 41 minutes in the 115-110 victory. Game two is in Phoenix on Tuesday night.
Forward Jalen McDaniels (2017-19) played in the first two games of Philadelphia's series against Brooklyn. In Saturday's first game, he put up five points, four rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes in a 121-101 win. In game two, on Monday night, McDaniels recorded two rebounds, two assists and a steal in 22 minutes in a 96-84 victory. The third game is set for Thursday night.
Guard Malachi Flynn (2020) did not appear in Toronto's play-in loss to Chicago.
In the MLB, Seattle infielder Ty France (2013-15) played all six of his team's games last week at first base. He hit .350 with a .519 on-base percentage, six RBIs and five runs scored. France hit two RBI singles on Tuesday and a two-run double in a two-run win on Friday. He also had another RBI double on Monday night. France wrapped up an 11-game hitting streak on Friday, his longest of the season, and the second longest of his career. This season, he is batting .324 with a .418 on-base percentage, one home run, 12 RBIs, 15 runs scored and a stolen base. France leads the American League with 17 games played and eight doubles so far this season.
Infielder David Hensley (2015-18) started three games at designated hitter for Houston, with two additional games where he entered as a pinch hitter. He singled and scored in his lone plate appearance last Tuesday. This season, Hensley has seven hits with two RBIs, five runs scored and a stolen base.
Catcher Seby Zavala (2012-15) started twice at catcher and came off the bench as a pinch runner for the Chicago White Sox. On the week, he batted .429 with a .500 on-base percentage and a run scored. This season, he is batting .353 with one home run, two RBIs, four runs scored and a stolen base.
Colorado infielder Alan Trejo (2015-17) played a game each at third base and shortstop. On Sunday, Trejo doubled. In Monday's game, he pitched for the first time in his big-league career. Trejo allowed a home run and retired the other three hitters he faced in one inning. This season, he is batting .316 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Pitcher Garrett Hill (2018) earned a hold in Detroit's win over San Francisco on Friday night. It was his first hold of the season as he pitched a third of an inning while allowing two earned runs on one hit. Hill was optioned to Triple-A following the game. This season, he has pitched seven innings, recording a save and a hold while maintaining a 10.29 ERA and 1.71 WHIP with seven strikeouts.
Washington pitcher Stephen Strasburg (2007-09) is on the 60-Day IL.
On the PGA Tour, Xander Schauffele (2013-15) placed fourth in the RBC Heritage at 15-under-par while J.J. Spaun(2009-12) and Scott Piercy (1999-2001) did not make the cut in the event. Schauffele is ranked fifth in the world and 31st in the FedEx Cup and has won seven PGA Tour events in his career. Spaun ranks 71st in the world and 53rd in the FedEx Cup with one career PGA Tour victory. Piercy has four career PGA Tour wins. Next weekend, all three will compete in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in Louisiana, April 20-23.
