COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State softball's Allie Light has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for a third straight time, the league announced Tuesday.
Light became the fourth Aztec to win the award in three consecutive weeks, joining Christina Ross (Feb. 19-March 4, 2008), Samantha Beasley (April 6-20, 2010) and Maggie Balint (March 30-April 12, 2022). Ross, Beasley and Balint all were eventually named the MW Pitcher of the Year in those respective seasons.
Since the MW began in 2000, there have been seven times that a pitcher has won the weekly award three straight times in the same season and a SDSU pitcher has accomplished the feat four times. Only Fresno State's Hailey Dolcini (March 2-23, 2021) and Jill Compton (April 7-28, 2015) have won the award four consecutive weeks in the same season.
Light led San Diego State to a 2-1 series win at Utah State last weekend with the Aztecs winning both games she pitched in. The Lexington, South Carolina native went 2-0 with a 0.70 ERA in 10 innings, striking out six. Light allowed just four walks and six hits (four singles) for a .171 average.
Light got the win in a 13-0, six-inning SDSU victory on Thursday night, tossing four scoreless innings with four hits and one walk allowed, while striking out two. The right-hander picked up the win for San Diego State in a 6-3 victory on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over six innings, while striking out four.
On the season, Light is 7-4 with a 1.51 ERA and five saves in 74 1/3 innings. She has struck out 72 and limited the opposition to a .199 average. Light has been even more dominant in league play, going 4-0 with a 0.80 ERA in 33 1/3 innings, striking out 26.
The Aztecs host a doubleheader with UNLV, beginning at 4 p.m. PT Wednesday.
