BOISE, Idaho – San Diego State women's tennis earned a 4-0 sweep on Saturday afternoon over Utah State. After winning the doubles point, the Aztecs earned three singles matches in straight sets to claim the win.
The Aztecs (9-5, 2-1 MW) took an early lead in the match after taking the doubles point from the Aggies (5-8, 0-3 MW). SDSU shuffled the lineup on Saturday, with Tamara Arnold and Cecile Morin paired up on court three, while Rania Azziz and Alicia Melosch reunited on court one, and the usual pairing of Andjela Skrobonja and Andreea Velcea played together on court two. The Aztecs dropped the first of three matches on court two, 6-4 before rallying on the other two courts to earn the win. Arnold and Morin clinched the first win in doubles for the Aztecs with a 6-4 win on court three, before Azziz and Melosch earned SDSU the point with a 7-5 tiebreaker win on court one.
As for singles play, the Aztecs once again played strongly on all six courts. On courts two and six Arnold and Velcea earned dominant wins in each of their first sets, 6-2 and 6-1 respectively, to set the tone for singles play. Velcea then gave the Aztecs a 2-0 lead in the match when she earned a straight sets win, 6-1, 6-2 on court six. Arnold quickly followed with another straight sets win of her own, 6-2, 6-4 to put the Aztecs firmly in control of the match. With a 3-0 lead already in hand, Rania Azziz clinched the sweep for the Scarlet and Black. She earned a hard fought 7-6 (5), tiebreaker win in her first set, and followed that up with a 6-3 win in her second set to give the Aztecs a 4-0 sweep of the Aggies.
