STOCKTON, Calif. – For the second game in a row senior Amanda Legaspi lead the team in scoring, but the No. 25 Aztecs dropped a heartbreaker to No. 12 Pacific on Saturday afternoon, 10-9 at the Spieker Athletics Complex on the campus of the University of the Pacific.
With the loss SDSU moves to 9-15 on the season, 2-2 in Golden Coast Conference action.
In addition to Legaspi's three goals, which was the second time in as many games that she did so, six other Aztecs added a goal each but it wasn't enough as Pacific rallied late on to take the win, 10-9. In net for SDSU, Mandy Lagerlof made 10 stops.
The Aztecs started strongly in the first period of play, scoring the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead before the Tigers responded in the second period of play. In that second period Pacific came to life, but not until the final few minutes of the half, when they scored two quick goals to make it a 3-2 game at the half.
The second half was more of a back and forth effort from both sides, as Pacific scored the first two goals of the half to take a 4-3 lead before the Aztecs almost instantly responded. Legaspi scored her second of the game midway through the period, to tie the game up at 4-4. Pacific would then score two of the next three goals to take a 6-5 lead heading into the final period of play.
In the fourth period the offenses came to life, as both teams traded blows throughout the period. Pacific scored their 10th goal of the afternoon with 3:13 to play to take a 10-7 lead, and the Aztecs look to make a comeback in the final few moments. Samantha Loughlin scored with 2:45 remaining and Legaspi completed her hat trick to cut the deficit to 10-9 with 1:25 left in the game, but the Aztecs could not grab a goal at the end, and fell 10-9 on Saturday afternoon.
