SAN DIEGO - In voting by the 11 Mountain West head coaches and based on league contests only, senior guard Matt Bradley, senior forward Nathan Mensah, and junior guard Lamont Butler have been recognized for their play in the 2022-23 campaign.
Bradley has been named a first-team All-Mountain West performer. Mensah is the Defensive Player of the Year, a member of the All-Defensive Team and a third-team All-Mountain West designee. Butler earned inclusion on the All-Defensive Team and is also a third-team All-Mountain West performer.
Bradley received first-team honors for the second consecutive season and led San Diego State in points (390), points per game (13.0), field goal (138), field goal attempts (335), and 3-point field goal attempts (129). He was second in 3-point field goals (48), free throws (66) and free throw attempts (83), as well as third in assists (66) and fourth in steals (22).
The San Bernardino, Calif., native, recorded 21 double figure scoring games and led the team in scoring on 13 occasions. In addition, he paced the Aztecs in rebounds four times and assists seven times.
In conference games, among Mountain West players, he ranked No. 9 in 3-point field goals, No. 13 in field goal percentage and No. 15 in scoring.
Mensah earned his second straight conference Defensive Player of the Year award an All-Defensive Team designation. The Aztecs back line stopper's 46 blocks ranked second overall in the league, as did his average of 1.53 per game, which ranks No. 61 nationally. He was No. 10 in rebounds (5.77 per game) and No. 6 in offensive boards (2.13 per game).
In conference games, he averaged 1.50 blocks per contest (27 total in 18 games). His 2.39 offensive rebounds per game ranked fourth and he was 13th in rebounding (5.67 per game).
The native of Accra, Ghana, recorded at least one block in 13-of-18 league games and had multiple blocks in nine of those 13 contests. He swatted a season-best four shots at Fresno State, and he is just one of two players in program history to score at least 900 points, grab 800 rebounds and block 200 shots. Entering the Mountain West tournament he has 930 points, 840 rebounds and 217 blocks in his Aztec career. He ranks second in blocks and third in rebounding on the program's career lists.
Mensah recorded three games of 10 or more rebounds, had a pair of double doubles, and led the Aztecs in rebounds 13 times (SDSU was 12-1 in those games). Offensively, he reached double figures in six games, including two games of 15 or more points.
Butler, now a two-time All-Defensive Team member, earned All-Mountain West honors for the first time in his Aztec career.
He led San Diego State with 49 steals, including a team-high 24 in Mountain West play, and ranked No. 4 and No. 7 in those categories, respectively. His 1.63 steals per game are the 123rd best average in the nation and his 49 total steals are No. 125 in the nation.
He totaled a career-best six steals against Brigham Young, which tied for the most by a player in the league this season, and his seven assists and seven rebounds against UNLV are both career bests.
A starter in 29-of-30 appearances, he set career-bests in nearly every statistical category and in Mountain West games he averaged 8.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 3.3 assists.
The Aztecs open the 2023 Mountain West Men's Basketball Championship as the No. 1 seed and will play the winner of the game between No. 8-seed Colorado State and No. 19 seed Fresno State, in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 9 at noon PT with the game being broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
