LA JOLLA, Calif. – Chikaya Sato and Johannes Seeman of the San Diego State men's tennis team won twice on Sunday, March 5, to win the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships.
In a tournament that started with 128 doubles pairings on Thursday night, there were four left by Sunday morning. The Semifinals matchup for 17th seeded Seeman and Sato was Pepperdine's pairing of Daniel DeJonge and Tim Zeitvogel, ranked second. The Scarlet and Black duo won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the Final against Nebraska's William Gleason and Calvin Mueller, also ranked 17th. The first set was hard fought, going to a tiebreaker but the Aztecs ended up on top, taking the set 7-6 (7-3). Just one set away from a title, Seeman and Sato wasted no time as they powered their way to a 6-3 win to earn the trophy and the title of champions.
The duo will get a week to celebrate their victory before the next match for San Diego State. SDSU hosts No. 7 ranked Harvard on Monday, March 13, and No. 53 ranked Wisconsin on Wednesday, March 15 with the San Diego Spring Invitational also taking place at the Aztec Tennis Center from Friday, March 17 through Sunday, March 19.
