SAN DIEGO – The Aztec women's golf team will play in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Friday through Sunday.
The 15-team field features 11 power-five teams, including seven from the SEC, and 10 teams ranked in Golfstat's top 50 and five in the top 20.
Teams will play 18 holes each day. The Aztecs tee off at 7 a.m. PT Friday and will be paired with Alabama and Arkansas.
The Aztecs will roll out a starting five of Bernice Olivarez Ilas, Andrea Gomez, Anika Sato, Sammy Lee and Anna Lina Otten. This is their same lineup and order as their last tournament, the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational, making it the first time SDSU has used the same lineup in consecutive tournaments this season.
Olivarez Ilas (Ayala Alabang, Philippines) leads the team with an 18-hole average of 73.9 strokes. She has led the Aztecs in five of their seven tournaments this season and has three top-15 finishes on the year.
Gomez (Huixquilucan, Mexico) had a consistent 229 (76-76-77) in SDSU's last tournament and is third on the team averaging 76.3 strokes per 18.
Sato (Utsunomiya, Japan) is averaging 75.8 strokes per 18, good for second on the team.
Lee (San Ramon, Calif.) has started all seven tournaments for the Aztecs. In the final tournament of the fall, she had a career-best performance, shooting a 223 at the Hurricane Invitational.
Otten (Neuss, Germany) finished second among Aztec golfers in their last tournament with a 226 (73-79-74) and her opening round 73 was a team-low.
This is the 51st annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, named after Georgia's fall of fame coach and longtime Senior Woman Administrator.
The tournament will be played on the University of Georgia Golf Course, which is 6,327 yards and plays as a par 72. Set on rolling terrain, it is widely regarded as one of the best university courses in the country.
The Aztecs have played three spring tournaments, all in California, and have dealt with rain and wind in every tournament. The weekend forecast in Athens, Ga. Calls for temperatures in the 70s but there is a chance of rain Saturday morning.
