KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Three San Diego State student-athletes concluded their stay at the 2023 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, competing in a pair of events during the preliminary session at the University of Tennessee's Allan Jones Aquatic Center.
In the 200 backstroke, Alex Roberts narrowly missed advancing to the "B" finals by 0.46 seconds after touching the wall at 1:53.21 to finish in a tie for 20th place.
Likewise in the 200 breaststroke, the Aztecs had two swimmers denied in their quest to reach Saturday evening's final session. Christiana Williams placed 35th in the preliminaries with a time of 2:11.10, while Kristina Murphy was slotted 41st after clocking in at 2:11.82.
Despite the results, SDSU is still enjoying another highly successful season after winning its second straight Mountain West championship last month in Houston, Texas. The Aztecs captured 10 individual gold medals and swept all five relay events, setting a conference record with 1,638 team points en route to its fourth MW title in the last five years and seventh since 2011.
Along with sending at least one individual to the NCAA Championships for the 14th time in program history, SDSU compiled a 14-0 record in dual-meet action during the 2022-23 season, extending its winning streak to 50 in that category with a victory at San Diego on Jan. 27. The Aztecs have not lost a dual meet since Jan. 8, 2018, a stretch of over five years.
San Diego State will participate in one final team competition for the 2022-23 campaign next month when it plays host to USD once again in a long course dual meet on Thursday, April 20, at Aztec Aquaplex. Race time is set for noon PT.
