SAN DIEGO – The Aztec lacrosse team (4-6) knocked off Howard (0-7) 19-2 Sunday morning at the Aztec Lacrosse Field. The contest was highlighted by nine Aztecs scoring goals, led by Deanna Balsama with five and followed by Mia Kohn with three.
The Aztecs got off to an early start, scoring eight goals in the first quarter. Contributions came from Sydney Wolfington with three, Deanna Balsama with four, and Brook Waddell with one, all within the first 15 minutes.
SDSU tacked on an additional six goals in the second, highlighted by Victoria Rankin and Morgan Delwiche's first goals of the season. In addition to Rankin and Delwiche, Sara Toner and Deanna Balsama put up a goal each in the second while Mia Kohn added two.
The Aztecs continued on their scoring run throughout the third and fourth, adding five more goals, to give them a 19-2 victory over the Bison of Howard. Reilly Hunter contributed one for her first goal of the season.
Outside of Waddell's one goal, she had eight assists on the day, breaking the record for most assists in a game, previously set at five by Emily Resnick.
Goalkeeper Avery Dyer made her first start of the season and had 4 saves.
The Aztecs outshot the Bison 28-9 and 23-8 in shots on goal. They also had an advantage in caused turnovers (18-6) and ground balls (21-17).
Howard's two goals came from Quai Skeete-Ridley. Goalkeeper Jada Auletta had four saves for the Bison.
