No. 22 Water Polo Host Aztec Invitational this Weekend

SAN DIEGO – After playing in three tournaments on the road and looking to snap a seven-game slide, the No. 22-ranked San Diego State water polo team host its own tournament this weekend, the Aztec Invitational, at Aztec Aquaplex from Friday through Sunday.
 
Friday, March 10
No. 22 San Diego State vs. Siena – noon PT
No. 22 San Diego State vs. Villanova – 2 p.m. PT
Saturday, March 11
No. 22 San Diego State vs. St. Francis – 9:30 a.m. PT
No. 22 San Diego State vs. No. 15 Villanova – 2 p.m. PT
Sunday, March 12
No. 22 San Diego State vs. Westcliff – 2 p.m. PT

About the Aztecs
• San Diego State's record stands at 3-11, with 12 of its 13 Division I games coming against top-25 teams and of the remaining game was played against the No. 1 ranked team in Division III. 
• The Aztecs' scoring is paced by senior Amanda Legaspi, who leads the team with 18 goals, and freshman Claudia Valdes, who has found the back of the cage 17 times. Sophomore Klara Goldstein has posted double digit goals with 10 tallies.
• Valdes, a native of Madrid, Spain, also leads the team in shots (45), assists (13), and steals (19). Legaspi is second in shots (41), points (29) and third in assists (11). Rose Kanemy, a sophomore, ranks second in assists (12) and third in points (18).
• Among players who average at least 2.0 shots per game, Legaspi leads the team in shot percentage at .439 and exclusions drawn (22).
• Freshmen Mandy Lagerlof and Tiaare Ahovelo have played nearly all the minutes in goal. Lagerlof is 2-7 in 227 minutes. Her GAA is 13.11 with a team high 70 saves a .429 save percentage lead the team as do her five steals for the goalies. Ahovelo has played 216 minutes with a 1-4 record and a goals against average of 13.19 and .386 save percentage. She has made 56 saves and tops the goalies with four assists.
• Sophomore Sophia Righetti leads the Aztecs with 10 field blocks. 

Inside the Matchups
Siena (4-7)
• This is the second meeting between these programs with SDSU taking the only previous matchup, a 10-2 result in the 2019 season in a neutral site game in Tempe, Ariz.
• The Saints enters the week with a 4-7 record after splitting four games in last week's Harvard Invitational.
 
Villanova (8-8)
• This is the second meeting between the Aztecs and Wildcats. San Diego State won the only previous game, a 14-2 triumph at the Aquaplex in the 2019 season.
• Villanova entered the week with a 7-8 record, but lost at No. 24 CSUN, 12-9.
 
St. Francis (6-11)
• This will be the fourth meeting between these programs. San Diego State holds a 3-0 lead in the all-time series, having two of its three victories coming at the Aquaplex. The last matchup was last season, a 12-4 victory in the Aztecs' pool.
• Villanova enters the week with a 6-11 record after dropping three of four at the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
 
No. 15 Princeton (12-1)
• The Tigers and Aztecs have played 21 times with SDSU holding a 14-7 advantage in the all-time series. In games played at the Aquaplex, San Diego State is 7-5. After dropping seven in a row, the Scarlet and Black won a sudden victory 12-11 in the 2022 Aztec Mini Invite I.
• Princeton, riding an eight-game win streak, hasn't lost since January 29 to then No. 17 Wagner.
 
Westcliff (1-8)
• The Warriors and Aztecs have never met.
• Westcliff, an NAIA program, has lost its last seven games entering the week.
