Aztecs Edge California 11-9

SAN DIEGO – The Aztec lacrosse team (1-3) defeated California (1-3) 11-9 Sunday afternoon. SDSU had six different players score including four from Deanna Balsama and three from Caitlin Jones.

"Cal is always a hard win for us because every time it's a battle to the end," Head coach Kylee White said after the game. "I think it was an important win for us to win in a way that we had to fight until the end. It wasn't just a breeze. We earned that win, and it wasn't pretty, but it was a win and we'll take it."

The Aztecs scored the first four goals to take an early lead before the Golden Bears responded with three of their own.

The Aztecs kept the lead 7-4 at the half and then tacked on another four goals in the second half to secure the victory over the Golden Bears.

SDSU outshot California 29-24 and 24-19 in shots on goal. They also had an advantage in draw controls (15-9) and caused turnovers (11-8).

Two Aztecs scored multiple goals, Deanna Balsama (4) and Caitlin Jones (3), while four additional Aztecs contributed one goal each: Sydney Wolfington, Brook Waddell, Emma Betts, and Cailin Young. It was just the second goal of the year for Emma Betts and first for Sydney Wolfington.

Cailin Young led SDSU with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Goalkeeper Sam Horan finished with 10 saves.

Sydney Wolfington scored her first goal of the season while Kate Christos made her first start as an Aztec.
