SAN DIEGO – The Aztec women's basketball team hosts San Jose State Saturday at 1 p.m. and then plays at Boise State Monday at 5:30 p.m. PT.
 
Aztec Tidbits
• SDSU's 17-5 start is the Aztecs' best record through 21 games since the 2012-13 season (also 17-5). SDSU began the season 9-1 which was their best start since 1995-96.
• The Aztecs are coming off a 75-56 win over Fresno State Thursday night to earn their first season sweep over the Bulldogs since the 1996-97 season.
• SDSU had seven players score between eight and 11 points and had 21 assists on their 30 made field goals.
• The Aztecs' 17 wins are their most since the 2012-13 season.
• Defensively, the Aztecs are first in the Mountain West in points allowed (55.9) and three-point percentage defense (.277) and second in steals per game (1023).
• On offense, SDSU is second in the Mountain West in three-point percentage (.351) and assists per game (15.1) and third in field goal percentage (.441) and turnover margin (+4.5).
• SDSU has a 1.33 assist-to-turnover ratio in conference play. Their 1.05 assist-to-turnover ratio on the season is their best since the 1983-84 season.
• The Aztecs have six players averaging between 8.0 and 13.0 points per game.
• SDSU has six players in their fifth year of college and all six are currently pursuing a master's degree.
• Sophia Ramos is the only player in the nation with at least 1,800 points, 600 rebounds and 450 assists in her career.
• Ramos is second in school history in points and assists and is in the top three in program history in five other statistical categories including games (1st), made free throws (3rd), and made threes (3rd). She has scored in double-digits 104 times in her career.
• Ramos leads the Mountain West and is 16th in the nation in free throw percentage (.896).
• Mercedes Staples (Centerville, Utah), who returned after missing seven games due to injury, is shooting 48.0 percent from three on the year and 40.2 percent in her SDSU career, both of which are the best in program history.
• Asia Avinger is second in the Mountain West in assists per game (4.9) and field goal percentage (.533) in conference play.
• SDSU is 14-0 when scoring 60 or more points.
• In their 22 games, SDSU has had fewer turnovers than their opponent 17 times and a better field goal % on 15 occasions.
• SDSU has had more steals than their opponent in all but three games and their 10.2 swipes per game is 35th in the country.
• 12 of SDSU's 17 wins have been by double-digits and six have been by at least 20 points.
• The Aztecs have held their opponent under 50 points seven times and under 40 percent shooting 13 times.
• SDSU is 12-1 at home this season with an average margin of victory of 19.8 points. Since the beginning of last year, the Aztecs are 22-6 inside Viejas Arena.
• The Aztecs have had four different players lead the team in scoring in at least five games (Avinger, Prohaska, Ramos & Staples).
• SDSU's .769 (10-3) non-conference winning percentage was their best since the 1995-96 season (10-2, .833). According to the NET, SDSU played the second-hardest non-conference schedule in the Mountain West.
• Six Aztecs had at least a 3.50 GPA in the 2022 fall semester, including Sarah Barcello and Sophia Ramos who each had perfect 4.0s in their Master of Education program.
• Including SDSU, five Mountain West teams are in the top 125 of the NET. The Aztecs are ranked No. 88.
 
Player Notes
• Asia Avinger (Cerritos, Calif.) has 44 assists and 22 turnovers in conference play. Her 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio is third in the Mountain West.
Sarah Barcello (Phoenix, Ariz.) is shooting 47.8% from three in Mountain West games. She has made five of her last six three-point attempts.
• Alex Crain (McKinney, Texas) is shooting 42.9% from three in conference play.
• Yummy Morris (North Little Rock, Ark.) is one of two Aztecs (Villalobos) to start every game this season.
• 48.2% of Khylee Pepe's (Long Beach, Calif.) rebounds are on the offensive end, by far the most on the team.
Abby Prohaska (Liberty Township, Ohio) has led the Aztecs in scoring six times, the most on the team.
• Sophia Ramos (San Antonio, Texas) played her 129th game as an Aztec on Thursday, the most in program history.
• Mercedes Staples (Centerville, Utah) is shooting 56.3% from the field and 50% from three in her last four games since returning from injury.
Kim Villalobos (Los Angeles) is averaging 10.0 points while shooting 52% from the field in conference play.
 
Opponent Notebook (San Jose State)
• The Spartans are 3-17 on the year and 1-8 in conference.
• They are 1-8 on the road.
• Their lone conference win was a 77-59 victory over Utah State.
• On offense, they are last in the conference in points per game (56.2), turnovers (18.7) and assists per game (8.3)
• On defense, they are 10th in the Mountain West in points allowed per game (67.6) and field goal percentage defense (.448).
• Marisa Davis-Jones leads the team with 11.3 points per game.
• Jada Holland averages 10.4 points per game and leads the Mountain West with 2.7 steals per game.
• Head coach April Phillips is in her first year as San Jose State's head coach. She made previous stops as an assistant at Texas, Cal, Arizona, LMU, Georgia Tech and New Haven.
