Aztecs Hosting Alabama For Home Opener Friday

SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis returns to action on Friday for their home opener against Alabama. First serve is set for 2 p.m. PT at the Aztec Tennis Center.

The Aztecs opened the season last Friday evening at nationally ranked No. 14 USC, and fought back and forth all evening with the Trojans, but came up short in the contest, falling 6-1. However, transfer Dariya Detkovskaya did win her singles match over nationally ranked No. 17 in the country, Snow Han.

SDSU looks to bounce back after the loss on Friday, and play their next four matches at the Aztec Tennis Center starting with Alabama, before UC San Diego next week, followed by home matches against Rice and Hawai'i to begin February. All-time against Alabama the Aztecs are 0-1, with the only match coming on January 31, 2020, a match the Aztecs lost 5-2. Three current Aztecs participated in that match, Tamara Arnold, Alicia Melosch and Julia Jordan with Jordan winning her singles match that day in three sets.

After a promising end to their 2022 campaign, the Aztecs posted a strong fall competition, with multiple Aztecs winning individual and doubles tournaments throughout the fall. Transfers Detkovskaya and Skrobonja impressed at the USD Intercollegiate Invitational in particular, a field which included mostly Power 5 competition, and won the doubles title.

Individually, four Aztecs won tournaments in the fall. Skrobonja also became the first Aztec to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Southwest Regionals, taking down multiple Power 5 opponents en-route to the semifinals of the event. In total the Aztecs bring back athletes who saw playing time at the No. 1 through 5 slots in the order in 2022.

The Aztecs 19 wins during the 2021-22 season were their most since the 2012-13 season, and their 6-2 record in conference play was the squads best win-percentage since the 2012-13 season as well.
