SAN DIEGO – On Wednesday, the Mountain West Conference announced its awards for the first week of the men's tennis season and both went to San Diego State Aztecs. Johannes Seeman was named Mountain West Player of the Week while Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice earned the Mountain West Freshman of the Week designation. The announcement was made at the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colo.
For the entirety of last season, the Aztecs won two conference Player of the Week honors and have matched that number in the first week of the 2023 campaign.
In his third season on The Mesa, Seeman garnered the second Mountain West Player of the Week award of his collegiate career, having previously earned the honor on April 26, 2021.
Last week, he played in the No. 1 singles spot and defeated Arkansas' Stafanos Savva 6-4, 6-3. He was the only SDSU player to win his match in straight sets. After falling behind 4-1 in the first set, Seeman won eight consecutive games to take the set and jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second; a lead which he would not give up. His win was the first point of the day for the Scarlet and Black.
In doubles, Seeman played with Alexander Mandma but fell 6-4.
In the second season the award has been handed out, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice is the first Aztec in program history to win conference Freshman of the Week honors. The San Diego native made his collegiate dual-match debut against the Razorbacks and after splitting the first two sets, 6-3, 0-6, closed out his singles match in a hard-fought third set against Foster Rogers 7-5. Playing at the No. 6 spot, his gritty win kept San Diego State's hopes of defeating Arkansas alive as they trailed by one point with two matches still playing.
In doubles, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice paired with Mathieu Josserand and trailed 5-3, but the match was not finished due to the doubles point already being decided.
Seeman, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and the Scarlet and Black resume their spring schedule on Saturday, Jan. 21, with their home opener against San Francisco at Aztec Tennis Center. The action is scheduled to get underway at noon PT.
