COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Mountain West released a new football schedule rotation for the 2023-25 seasons on Thursday. The announcement comes on the heels of the league eliminating football divisions beginning in 2023.
The new schedule rotation, which will allow MW institutions to play each other more often, enhances the opportunity of matching the two best teams in the MW Football Championship Game annually, providing access to the New Year's 6/College Football Playoff more frequently.
The new model, which avoided repeat matchups at the same location from 2022 to 2023, is based on a 2-6 structure where each team will play two guaranteed opponents annually and face six other conference teams. During the three-year cycle, all teams will face nine of 11 opponents at least twice, once at home and once on the road, and two opponents in each of the three years.
With the new schedule, San Diego State is slated to play Hawai'i and Utah State all three years, and the rest of the nine league schools twice. In 2023, the Aztecs will play host to Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada and Utah State with road games at Air Force, Colorado State, Hawai'i and San Jose State. Under the new format, SDSU's 2024 home contests will feature Air Force, Colorado State, Hawai'i and Wyoming and road outings at Fresno State, New Mexico, UNLV and Utah State. In 2025, San Diego State will host New Mexico, San Jose State, UNLV and Utah State, while traveling to Boise State, Hawai'i, Nevada and Wyoming.
The rotation was created based on work of a subcommittee of MW athletics directors and was formally approved by the entire group of athletics directors.
SDSU (12-2) finished with a school-record 12 victories last season, one of only 10 programs with at least 12 wins. Only four teams had more victories than San Diego State, including national champion Georgia, and CFP teams Alabama and Cincinnati. The Aztecs played five teams who reached double-digit victories in 2021, securing wins over Pac-12 Champion/Rose Bowl participant Utah (10-4), UTSA (12-2) and Air Force (10-3).
SDSU, which played all 14 of its games away from its own market, including eight "home games" two hours from campus at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, finished the 2021 season ranked 25th in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll. It was the third time in program history San Diego State made the final AP Top 25 poll (also 1977 (16th) and 2016 (25th)). The Aztecs were also ranked in every CFP poll in 2021.
The Aztecs are set to open their 100th season of football at the new Snapdragon Stadium on Sept. 3 against Arizona.
