SAN DIEGO -- Former San Diego State men's golf All-American Xander Schauffele teamed with Patrick Cantlay to capture the Zurich Classic of New Orleans Sunday. It was Schauffele's fifth career PGA Tour victory and first since winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Jan. 6, 2019.
Entering Sunday's final round with a five-shot lead and playing Foursomes (alternate shot), Schauffele and Cantlay carded an even-par 72 on the 7,425-yard TPC Louisiana track, finishing with a tournament-record low 29-under 259 overall. Schauffele and Cantlay beat runner-up Billy Horschel and Sam Burns by two strokes, and broke the tournament record by two strokes as well (now held by three pairings).
Schauffele and Cantlay opened with a 13-under 59 in Thursday's first round while playing Four-ball (lowest score of each pairing). The duo then shot 4-under 68 in Foursomes on Friday before firing a 12-under 60 in Saturday's Four-ball, getting to 29-under and shattering the 54-hole tournament record by six strokes.
Schauffele's five PGA Tour victories have come at the 2017 Greenbrier Classic, 2017 Tour Championship, 2018 WGC-HSBC Champions, 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions and the 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Schauffele also won the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last summer.
Schauffele is the second former Aztec to win a PGA Tour event in the last month, joining J.J. Spaun, who took down the Valero Texas Open (March 31-April 3) for his first PGA Tour victory.
A two-time PING All-West Region honoree, Schauffele received All-America recognition following a brilliant senior campaign at San Diego State in 2015, garnering third-team accolades from the both the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and Golfweek.
In his three years on Montezuma Mesa, Schauffele amassed 21 top-10 finishes, 16 top-five performances and two individual titles before graduating with a degree in social science. He also owns the school record with a 71.50 career scoring average in 118 rounds played, as well as the program's single-season standard of 171 birdies set in 2014-15.
