PALOS VERDES, Calif. – Chikaya Sato and Johannes Seeman of the San Diego State men's tennis team played four matches, three singles and one doubles, on Friday, the first day of the Jack Kramer Collegiate Classic, winning the doubles and two of the singles matches.
No. 5-seeded Seeman drew Stefan Leustian, of UCLA, in the Round of 32 and picked up a win in a walkover. In the Round of 16, Seeman battled UC Santa Barbara's Gianluca Brunkow and earned his second win 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Seeman advances to the quarterfinals, where he draws Oregon's Ray Lo.
Sato went up against San Diego's Christian Kuehne in the Round of 32. After falling 6-3 in the first set, Sato battled back to take the second in the tiebreaker 7-6 (5) but could not complete the comeback as he was bested 7-5 in the deciding third set. Tomorrow, he will face UC San Diego's Phillip Lan in the consolation Round of 16.
In doubles, the pair dueled Arizona's No. 3-seeded duo of Jared Horwood and Hiroki Sakagawa and came through with the upset, winning 8-5. Tomorrow, they will face Oregon's Vlad Breazu and Jesper Klov-Nilsson in the quarterfinals.
The Jack Kramer Collegiate Classic continues tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 5.
