SAN DIEGO – After a two-week hiatus, the San Diego State swim and dive program returns to competition this weekend when it plays host to Utah Tech on Saturday, Oct. 5, in a dual meet at Aztec Aquaplex. First race is set for 10 a.m. PT, and admission is free.
Saturday's clash marks the Aztecs' first-ever dual meet against Utah Tech, which is located in St. George, Utah, and was formerly known as Dixie State University prior to July 1, 2022.
The Aztecs are coming off a clean sweep at the two-day GCU Quad Meet, Oct. 21-22, posting a combined 6-0 record over host Grand Canyon, Loyola Marymount and Seattle U. SDSU emerged victorious over the Lopes (147-76, 156-66) while rolling past the Lions (165-39, 168-34) and Redhawks (164-39, 168-36), respectively.
In all, the Aztecs captured 21 of 24 events to polish off a dominating weekend and extend their streak of consecutive dual-meet victories to 44 straight dating back to Jan. 8, 2018, a span of nearly five years.
SDSU sophomore Meredith Smithbaker competed in six races at the GCU Quad Meet, claiming two individual event titles and contributing to three triumphant Aztec relay teams to earn Mountain West Swimmer of the Week honors on Oct. 25.
Smithbaker recorded season-fast times in the 100 freestyle (50.31) and 50 freestyle (23.36) while swimming breaststroke on SDSU's winning 400 medley relay that established a pool record (3:46.88) to highlight an impressive set of performances in Phoenix.
Smithbaker's award was the Aztecs' third conference weekly accolade this year already after Kristina Murphy (swimmer) and Ximena Lechuga Gonzalez (diver) were honored on Oct. 11.
SDSU is 8-0 this season in dual-meet action after defeating the University of San Diego, 33-24, in its season-opening pentathlon meet on Sept. 9, followed by an 83-59 victory at Pepperdine on Oct. 6.
Members of the Western Athletic Conference, the Trailblazers opened their 2022-23 schedule with a 156-106 setback at Northern Colorado in a dual meet on Oct. 21.
Following Saturday's encounter, San Diego State will begin preparations for the SMU Invitational, Nov. 17-19, in Dallas, Texas.
