SAN FRANCISCO – Four members of the Aztec men's soccer team received All-Pac-12 recognition, the conference office announced Tuesday. CJ Fodrey was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and to the First Team, Blake Bowen and Jacob Castro were second team selections and Iñigo Villaldea was an honorable mention selection.
This is the first time since 2016 the Aztecs have had four players honored and the first time since 2012 that three Aztecs were named to the first or second team.
Fodrey (San Diego) is just the second Aztec to win a Pac-12 postseason award, joining Nick Cardenas who was the conference's Freshman of the Year in 2006. His team-high 18 points was the most by a SDSU freshman since at least 2000. He finished the year with seven goals, two of which were game-winners, and four assists.
This is Bowen's (San Clemente, Calif.) third time being recognized after being an honorable mention selection each of the past two years. Bowen was the only Aztec to start all 18 matches and his three goals in conference tied Fodrey and Villaldea for the team lead.
Castro (Spanaway, Wash.), one of SDSU's team captains, was the only goalkeeper named to the first or second team. A first team selection a year ago, he is the first Aztec netminder to make the first or second team in back-to-back years since All-American Tally Hall in 2005 and 2006.
Villaldea (Gijón, Spain) led the Aztecs with eight points in conference play. Like Bowen, he has earned All-Pac-12 recognition in each of the past three seasons. He was an honorable mention pick in 2020 and a first team selection last year. Villaldea was also named to the College Sports Communicators All-Academic All-District Team earlier today.
