SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The San Diego State men's tennis team played nine matches, seven singles and two doubles on Saturday afternoon, winning five of the singles and both doubles on the second day of the UCSB Fall Classic.
One of two Aztecs to win both his singles matches, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice started out against Saint Mary's College's Thibaud Maxant, cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 victory. He kept it going in his second, defeating Cal Poly's Ben Keyser 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.
Also accounting for two singles wins was Andre Saleh. Saleh dominated Southern Methodist's Kyle Pham 6-2, 6-1 before coming up with his second victory against Westmont's Ethan Ha 6-3, 6-4.
Coming off a win yesterday, Liam Spiers faced Cal Poly's Carter Crookston, but was bested 6-3, 6-0.
Mathieu Josserand went up against Emin Torlic of Loyola Marymount and fell 6-2, 6-3. In his second match of the day, he bounced back against Redd Owen, of Brigham Young, sweeping the Cougar 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, Spiers and Saleh took down the tandem of Southern Methodist's Pham and John Zisette 8-4.
Josserand and Gonzalez Fitzmaurice faced off against Zachary Pellouchoud and Fernando Fonseca from Cal Poly and beat them to the tune of a 8-3 win.
The UCSB Fall Classic finishes up tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 9.
